Is satin the same as silk?

No. To understand why, it helps to break down how fabric is made:

  1. Fibre

The raw material used to spin thread (e.g., silk, cotton, polyester).

  2. Weave

The technique used to interlock those threads into fabric (e.g., satin, percale, twill).

Satin is a weave pattern, not a fibre. A satin weave creates a smooth, lustrous surface on one side, but it can be woven from almost any fibre, including silk, polyester, or nylon.

Therefore, the word “satin” alone cannot tell you what your sheets are made of.

What is polyester satin?

Polyester satin is a common synthetic alternative to real silk. Polyester is a petroleum-based fibre, the same material used to make plastic bottles.

Polyester satin traps heat and humidity against your body, leading to warm, damp nights.

The fibre name on the label is what separates the two.

What is silk?

Silk is an organic protein fibre produced by silkworms. Our fabric is 100% Grade 6A mulberry silk, harvested from Bombyx mori silkworms fed exclusively on mulberry leaves.

We use a charmeuse satin weave, which gives our pure mulberry silk its iconic, fluid drape and soft, pearly lustre.

How can I tell if sheets are real silk?

  1. Read the label

Under Canadian labelling regulations, sheets and pillowcases must show each fibre's name and percentage on the label. Look specifically for the word “Silk” or “100% Mulberry Silk.” Words like “Satin,” “Silky,” or “Satin-Feel” describe the finish or weave, not the fibre content.

  2. Check the weight

Weight confirms the momme (density) of the silk:

    • 1 momme equals 4.34 grams per square metre.
    • 22 momme silk weighs about 95.5 g per square metre (2.8 oz per square yard).
    • A 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 in) square of 22 momme silk weighs about 0.96 g on a scale that reads to 0.01 g.

Note: Weight confirms fabric density, but always pair this with the fabric label to confirm fibre origin.

  3. Perform a burn test (optional)

If you have a spare fabric sample or swatch:

    • Pure silk: Burns slowly, smells like burning hair, and leaves a soft black ash that crushes easily between your fingers.
    • Polyester: Melts rapidly, smells like burning plastic, and hardens into a solid plastic bead.

Always exercise caution and perform burn tests only in a safe, controlled environment.

Why choose Rêve & Silk?

Pure mulberry silk is a resilient natural fibre built for daily life. Here is how we craft our sheets and pillowcases to handle everyday sleep and easy home laundering:

  • Grade 6A long-strand mulberry silk: We select only Grade 6A silk, the top grade for raw silk. Smooth, even yarn resists pilling and maintains its soft hand feel over time.
  • 22-momme weight: We chose a dense 22-momme weight to strike the ideal balance between cool breathability and long-term durability.
  • Durable construction: Every seam is bound in pure silk with 12 stitches per inch to prevent fraying and withstand regular delicate machine washing.

Silk vs satin questions

Is satin silk?

No. Satin is a weave pattern, not a fibre. Satin can be woven from silk, polyester, or nylon. Always check the fibre declaration line on the care label to confirm what the fabric is made of.

Is satin polyester?

Often, yes. Many affordable satin products are made from polyester, a petroleum-based synthetic fibre. Check the care label for “100% Mulberry Silk” to ensure you are buying natural silk.

How can I tell if sheets are real silk?

Check the care label attached to the seam. By law, the label must list the exact fibre content. Look for “100% Silk” or “100% Mulberry Silk.” Ignore marketing terms like “satin weave” or “silky touch.”

What does “silk satin” mean?

“Silk satin” describes a satin weave crafted using pure silk fibres. Silk is the fibre, and satin (or charmeuse) is the weave technique that gives it a smooth, lustrous finish.

Is a silk pillowcase different from a satin pillowcase?

The underlying fibre can be completely different. A satin pillowcase is often made of polyester plastic, which traps heat. A silk pillowcase is made of natural protein fibres that are breathable and stay cool on contact.

Is real silk too delicate for everyday machine washing?

Our high-quality 22-momme Grade 6A mulberry silk with reinforced bound seams is engineered for regular machine washing. Simply use cold water, a delicate cycle, a pH-neutral detergent, and a mesh laundry bag.

Can I feel the silk before I buy?

Yes. You can request a free fabric swatch on our site to experience our 22-momme mulberry silk in person.
